Some moments in life have a way of sticking tightly to our hearts and souls! Do you agree? As I watched my Uncle being carted away from the place where he took his last breath, I was humbled and filled with gratitude that he would allow us to watch him transition to the next phase of his existence with courage, elegance, and pride! He lived a rather simple/complex life, but left a strong impression on me because of his tenacity to want to live... As they rang the bell- the pounding of my heart embraced its sound with pride and joy and many memories of him came rushing back...
About two weeks before he passed, my wife and I stood at his bedside and he bestowed wisdom on to us by saying, "Take care of yourselves and live to be happy. I am ready and I am not afraid of death!" Those words resonate to the core of my being because I saw myself lying there in his place and I wondered what I would say to my loved ones at such a vulnerable time. He unselfishly told us to not worry about him, but instead focused on our needs until the end! It was highly spiritual to me as well because I read in the good book that we are made in the image of God, and I felt as if God was talking to us through him. I saw a sincere peacefulness in his eyes and felt it throughout the room that day and the day that he passed away.
He died with undeniable dignity and I thank him for his spiritual lesson to me and my family. He gave my children a priceless gift of love, strength, and honor that has no price tag!
Like him and many others who serve our nation, he did not do this alone- he represented those that came before him and represented them with pride and gratitude til the end! He returned the favor by giving back the courage and sense of service he received from his military training and bonds to his comrades. I am very proud to call him Uncle!
Happy Memorial Day!
