What gets most of your attention? What do you give most of your attention to? I've found myself actually trying to consciously put my phone down and give people my undevided attention more often lately. Why? Well, sometimes I've been on fb, emailing, researching stuff, ebaying, blogging, tweeting, or texting and my kids are trying to talk to me and I catch myself half listening. Then the shoe was on the other foot where I've been on the other side of that situation where I'm talking to someone and they're on their phone and I've felt disregarded and disrespected. It quickly dawned on me that I have to be 100% present when I'm talking with people to make them feel heard and respected.
But we know that and we still do it!!!! WHY?Grrrrrrr- Yes, it becomes a habit just like anything else. Our phones even become our safety zone device because we feel connected and gives us a sense of importance. Or does it?
I know that that was not the intent of that person, to disregard and disrespect me, but it still sent that message! You are not as important as what I've got going on on my phone. Even if we think that we are multi-tasking, we may miss something critical that they are trying to convey to us. Research says that many people speak in riddles and sometimes deliberately so that you can try to figure out the message- the real message being communicated. Can we really decode the real message if we aren't even half present?
Nope- we can't! Even if you argue that you can- re-consider, re-think, and re-check when you are trying to talk to someone that is on their phone and you have something to say.
