What is it going to take? More threats from students against students? More suspensions, expulsions, and incarceration of children? How many more family tragedies and disruptions will it take?
My 18 year old asked me why some companies spend millions of dollars on beer commercials but the Nation won't spend millions of dollars on providing great mental health services to students in the schools.
For instance- she said, why can't we hire more counselors so that they are mandated to talk and reach out to every child? She was talking from her own personal experience in that the only time she felt comfortable approaching a counselor was when she really had to, otherwise, she felt like there was no access to them.
There are way too many school incidents of violence on the news lately and the fear is that society is going to learn to accept it as the norm! Aren't we already? Sure, we say "No Bullying!" But what do we really do to stop it? We address it on the surface- put a band aid over it and then heal.
When will we take a stand and make a no nonsense decision to make the peace happen, to identify those students who are or becoming volatile, and provide adequate counseling services to them?
We need a movement! We need to stand strong for our children!
