Why do most people collect stuff? I recall when I started my school counseling career and every note that I got from my students went into a special bin. The reason I collected them for over 20 years, is that they were my source of energy and my inspiration especially when times got challenging.
Collections can remind us of people, places and things that were special and impactful in a positive way. They can take us back through time when things were fun and happy. It is those items that can make us feel secure and accepted.
Collections can help us cope with some feelings that we weren’t able to express as children or even adults. They are a form of physical expression without us having to say anything. A piece of comic book art can remind you of yourself and the powers that you wish you would’ve had or helped you pretend you had.
Collecting is a beautiful art! It takes research, organization, and a passion! It gives us energy and it gives us drive. It empowers us to do what we do best as humans and that is to connect. There are a ton of people who come together to celebrate their hobby.
I love watching everyone come and go at ComicCon with their newly collected action figures, art, movies, posters, signatures, and etc. And even in the midsts of making your way through thousands of people that weekend, they are amongst the most nicest people you will ever meet. They are intensely patient and courteous for the love of collecting and being in the presence of the same type as them. It is a beautiful harmonious dance to witness!
Keep collecting and keep dancing!
