Isn't it amazing that many of us can recall who our favorite teacher was and why she or he was our favorite teacher of all time? They leave such a positive lasting impression on us that we can't help but take a little piece of them with us along our journey of this thing we call life.
But what exactly was it that they did to make us feel like we were worth something, like we really mattered, or like we could succeed? Was it the way they wrote on the chalkboard, the way they read aloud to the class, or was it their sincere caring personality? We believe that student achievement and student motivation is directly tied to the way a teacher shows her/his students that she cares about them as a person first and as a learner second. The learning is happening because it is all about the students and not the teacher just trying to raise test scores.
Most teacher know that they have a moral and professional obligation to prepare all students the same given the appropriate support and means. They also know that in order to perfect their art of teaching, they will have to be patient, understanding, firm, fair, trustworthy, and ultimately caring! Like in all professions, there is only a few teachers that you can point out and say, "There's no doubt in my mind that students learn in his/her classroom." These teachers are usually the ones still smiling at the end of the day, week, month, or year!
We believe that with the new Common Core State Standards in all schools, there will be many more teachers that will be smiling at the end of the day because learning for all children will be most important. There will be a lot more checking for understanding during an English and Math lesson by teachers and as a result, students will be asked to be active participants in their learning. This is a quick check and question strategy that informs teaching.
Students will win all the way around because they will know how to face the coming of a new technological era! Parents are going to start seeing their children more engaged in their work at home as well. They will also be a rise of bragging more about the great teachers they have. More and more teachers will be remembered because of simple yet magical strategies implemented by schools.
With that said, "Put a little MaxPower into your life!"
